James Bond producers leaning towards Idris Elba to follow Daniel Craig as the next James bond.  It's nothing super solid.  Antoine Fuqua mentioned a conversation he had with producer Barbara Broccoli.

My view on iconic role casting is that the actor needs to offer something different (more than just pigmentation) to distinguish himself from previous interpretations.  Daniel Craig as a rugged Bond offered a nice contrast to the suave Brosnan, even if his first outing in Casino Royale was probably his best Bond.  I believe Idris has the swagger and confidence to inhabit Bond.  Outside of the Wire, he's also much better in non-American roles with his natural accent (i.e. Luther).  We'll see if this gets to next stage.  He doesn't seem like he'd worry too much about being pigeon-holed by Bond.

Of course, there's the pressure and inevitable insistence that Bond has to be white.  I'm sure we'd get some nice overlap with the "Kathleen Kennedy, you've ruined Star Wars and the mythical heroes that adorned my childhood...", 4Chan and state-run TV.
Idris Elba being bond has become a meme over the past few years. I can't believe there are actual talks about this. But I feel like Idris is too old and popular to play bond, which is why I can't really see it happening. Not to mention the producer also said they were considering "female Bond".

I feel like, just like with every previous bond, there gonna pick an actor (or an actress) that nobody wanted. I remember there was a big backlash against Craig when he was cast, saying he was too short and how his hair was too light
^I only saw Elba mentioning a female Bond in those articles, probably just to deflect. It is true, they spend too much time procrastinating (it's like they're conducing a global poll with various names floated as trial balloons) on where they're going with the next Bond. Will Craig do another one? I only posted because Fuqua cited a discussion with the Bond producer. But, yeah at this point...Elba as Bond as a concept is played out but it would still be a significant move if they ever did it.
Idris has the gravitas but a female Bond just wouldn't be Bond, or am I alone in thinking that.
^Female Bond is too much of a heavy lift, I think. It would probably have to be the best Bond screenplay ever written with an amazing origins story component. Is she going to be from an orphanage? They could maybe spin off a female character but most of their characters are self-contained within single movies (save the recurring entourage). Maybe a Mossad agent (which may be predictable but believable). I think original characters work better.

There was an article where the Bond producer, Barbara Broccoli, mentioned the possibility of female bond

Craig is confirmed to do another one, directed by Danny Boyle set for 2019, but that will probably be his last film.
Yeah originals work better, I can see a female equivalent being a strong villain but experimental casting would probably be a detriment. In terms of Idris I think money talks, Skyfall was the biggest grossing film so far and a lot of that was down to cinematic style, music etc. If the production value is successful in making a spectacle, whoever plays the lead will matter less.
Not to be a dick, but the idea of a spy is to move secretly and avoid suspicion. Being a over 6 ft tall black man always attracts attention.
Sorry, but i dont see it.
Haha thats a fair point, I remember one of my friends saying that a black Scottish guy is rare enough

Too old? Hes 45. Roger Moore was 45 when he took the role and 58 when he relinquished it.

And Idris is in far better shape.

If Idris is not chosen, it will be because a white actress was chosen for Bond girl. Hollywood's race mixing rules are still very much in force when it comes to big budget movies: white men can cross the color line, white women cannot.
