Vince McMahon Investing $500mil on XFL2

When the new XFL was announced — right now you’re saying, “Oh that’s right! I totally forgot about that whole XFL thing!” — part of the story was that Vince McMahon had cashed in $100 million of his WWE stock for the new football league.

And $100 million would have been a major financial commitment. It was actually just a taste

While McMahon’s WWE empire allows him to take a half-billion dollar gamble on football, it’s a sign of how serious he is about making the XFL work this time.

The first time the XFL debuted, it started great and fizzled fast. The league didn’t seem to know how to turn the ship back around, and couldn’t overcome its fatal flaw of lousy play on the field.

Most startup businesses need funding and patience. The XFL, which is slated to start in 2020 as one of two new start-up leagues planning to enter the market, seems to have both this time around.
“People were focused on the $100 million, but the truth is that doesn’t even get us to the 20-yard line,” league CEO and commissioner Oliver Luck told ESPN.

I'd say its a bad investment. I think it would be really hard to take market share or players from the NFL. without the top players there just won't be a big draw ie. Arena football. Also with growing concern over brain damage and lawsuits related to that just seems like a bad time to enter that market

It's a fucking terrible investment.

This would be like buying a mansion in January of 2008. The football bubble is about to burst, and this is the worst time to be getting in. Less and less kids are playing the sport, less and less kids are following it. Michael Wilbon talked about this. Football is dying.

I respect McMahon. I'm surprised that a guy as smart and savvy as him is making a mistake this big. He's going to lose his money. The worst part is that the AAF is going to beat him to market by a year. So it's a dying and suddenly crowded market for Loser Ball. What's Loser Ball? Any league that employs second rate players who couldn't make the NFL. Arena ball is the closest any Loser League ever made it to success, and they were never really profitable. Franchises collapsed, teams constantly moved, and eventually the whole league shut down for a time.

Bad idea, Vince. Bad idea.

Vince McMahon has failed at every other business venture he has done outside of wrestling.

Besides the XFL, what else has he done outside of wrestling?

McMahon is so out of touch it's ridiculous. There's no way this will be a success. But oh well, it's his money. He can go all looney and lose it if he wants.

What does he think he has shot because of the protests and domestic abuse scandals? The NFL brand still isn't that weak. Seems like a terrible idea.

And he’s going to be a year or 2 behind that other spring football league. That’s starting before his league.
