I read that they could get a maximum of 5 years in prison, but since they are rich and famous white women, they most likely will get fined and suspended sentences.

College admission is, in principle, largely supposed to be on merit (at least meeting a certain threshold). Now, no one really believes that, especially with the hideous practice of legacy admissions. For reasons that probably have to do with status, the parents bought their kids' admittance (by way of fake scholarships, SAT cheating, 'charitable' donations). Loughlin's daughter has no real interest in being at college. She's just one of those vapid brand influencers.

The confluence of wealth and fraud. Who knew??

Nobody's going to do serious time in a case like this. And besides, only rich people get charged with bribery because only rich people can afford to pay bribes.

In any event, they were just trying to get their kids into a good school. I'm not sure this should even be a crime.

It's called fraud.  I'm not sure what ethical universe you reside in but in this one, payment of bribes is a crime.

This isn't bribing a cop or a politician. This is trying to get your kid into school.

We bribe people in restaurants to get special treatment all the time. It's called tipping. I really don't have a problem with parents doing this. Moreover, the real problem is inequality in education. So if higher education was free, which it should be, then this kind of bribery would be of no consequence.

^I'm all in for a non-tiered free-for-all education system but that's a separate issue. Fraud needs to be prosecuted at all levels. It's just that simple. And no, it's not analogous to tipping after service or to get a good seating. Moreover, tipping doesn't impact other customers the way it does students who are bypassed in favour of those who have no legitimate basis for admission.

I agree in theory, but those kids got in because of privilege and not merit and they took spots away from other people. It's the same kind of thing that kept qualified black people and women out of positions they were qualified for in the past.

I know the American dream is all smoke and mirrors but we can at least pretend that honesty and fair play means something, if we are going to start giving rich people free passes on proven corruption we might as well be an eastern block nation.

It's fraud.  Says more about the person doing it.  No integrity.  I agree, they have lots of money so they won't see any jailtime.
